What is PuTTY?

PuTTY is an open-source terminal emulator which is used for performing remote administration of Unix servers. It’s a free implementation of Telnet and SSH for Windows and Unix platforms, along with an xterm terminal emulator. It is written and maintained primarily by Simon Tatham.

Why use app?

It is a very popular choice for remote connections. It is a user-friendly client that is cross-platform. PuTTY is very easy to use, has a simple-to-use interface and it is free.

PuTTY also has a large number of features. It supports:

  • SSH version 1 and version 2 (and some features of version 1.5 and 2.0)
  • Telnet protocol
  • SOCKS proxy servers
  • A variety of encryption algorithms including AES, Blowfish, 3DES, CAST128 and more
  • Port forwarding
  • File transfer

PuTTY is a mature, open-source software project, with an active user community, and is widely used in support of moving and managing data with legacy applications and systems.
